Workmen's Halls and Institutes
Oakdale Workmen's Institute

The dramatic expansion of coal mining in the south Wales valleys during the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries resulted in an unprecedented growth in population: that of the Rhondda valleys, for instance, soared from 4,000 in 1861 to 163,000 by 1891. Workmen's halls and institutes provided important points of social, educational and cultural focus for these developing communities.
