Title

Dyes Made in America, 1915-1980: The CALCO Chemical Company, American Cyanamid, and the Raritan River

This book tells the story of the rise of the modern American organic chemicals industry through a representative facility, New Jersey's CALCO Chemical Company. Founded in 1915 in Bound Brook, CALCO was acquired by the American Cyanamid Company in 1929 and became the dye-making and organic chemicals hub of the corporation. CALCO became the largest manufacturer of Sulfa drugs and was a leader in vat dyestuffs, whitening agents, polyurethane and acrylic polymers. During much of the 20th Century the chemical industry was the largest manufacturing sector in the United States, but during the 60s and 70s fell into severe decline.
